St Osyth

St Osyth is approximately four miles from Clacton and twelve miles from Colchester. The beach is just over two miles from the centre of the village.

The Priory dominates the area at the centre of the village.
Parts of it are being renovated by City & Country Group

Unfortunately it is privately owned and not open to the public.

Structural repairs are taking place on the tower which was in danger of collapse. The tower is known as Abbott's Tower, but in fact was built by Lord Darcy after the dissolution of the monasteries.
It is constructed of limestone and a soft brown stone called septaria in a chequer board pattern. This has lime joints which are decorated with tiny shards of flint, which are known as gallets.

Another feature of the village is Mill Dam Lake. This can be seen in one of the smaller photos to the right. click on it to see a bigger picture. The lake is used for Water Skiing.

The Point Clear Road separates Mill Dam Lake from St Osyth Creek.
